4 Ways to Make Your Workplace More Trans Inclusive
1. Do not expect the environment to change just by hiring a Trans person
In order for a workplace culture to actually be inclusive there needs to be actions taken by the administration. They need to evaluate policies, company culture, and power dynamics of employees.
2. Educate Yourself
Understand and recognize your own biases because everyone has biases especially unconscious ones. Recognize what specific areas these biases show up for you and then start challenging them. For example, if you see someone who you cannot tell if they are a woman or a man possibly ask yourself why does it matter. Educate yourself on the facts around these biases. Continuing with the example learn about intersex individuals, gender roles, gender presentation, and other relevant topics.
3. Use Inclusive Language
Practice peoples pronouns outside of the office. Using the terms and identities people self report as is extremely important. Studies have shown that if an individuals pronouns are not used they are 4 times more likely to die by suicide.
4. Hire a Trans person to educate all stakeholders on Trans Identities and Pronouns
People who are transgender at the business should not be responsible for making the workplace more diverse. All members of the staff, board, clients, volunteers, and more need to get annual training. Make sure the training covers LGBTQIA 101, Gender and Gender Socialization, and comes from someone who is transgender and does not work at the company.
